Editing the Eartha M.M. White Archives Student Presentation

June 14, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Please join us on Tuesday, June 14, 2:00-3:30 in the Special Collections Reading Room (Thomas G. Carpenter Library, first floor), for a presentation related to the Summer A course DIG3990 Introduction to Electronic Textual Editing, taught in partnership by Aisha Johnson-Jones, Head of Special Collections and Archives, and Clayton McCarl, Associate Professor of Spanish. In this course, offered as part of the UNF DHI affiliate project Editing the Eartha M.M. White Archives, students have been preparing for online publication materials from one of the foundational and most important archival collections held at UNF. The event will begin with a talk by FSCJ Professor Tim Gilmore, who worked extensively with the Eartha M.M. White archives in the preparation of his 2014 book In Search of Eartha White, Storehouse for the People. Students from the course will then highlight documents of interest and share their experiences transcribing these materials and encoding them in TEI-XML. We hope you will be able to join us to celebrate the innovative work the students have done this semester. Their efforts have helped us in significant ways to develop a model for engaging students in the edition of archival materials bound for online publication. They also have brought new visibility to an array of fascinating materials related to the life and work of a critical but understudied figure in the history of Jacksonville.
