UNF Students Share DH Work

Students involved in the Digital Humanities at UNF have been busy over the past two weeks sharing their work and learning new skills.

On Wednesday, April 20, and Saturday, April 23, students in Professor James Beasley’s ENG4004 Research Methods in English discussed the work they have done with the WWI letters of Captain Ansel Brooks-Smith, held in Special Collections at UNF. Story maps imageOn Wednesday, April 20, students from the departments of English; History; Languages, Literatures and Cultures; and Political Science participated in the Introduction to TEI-XML and Introduction to Story Maps workshops sponsored by the DHI and led by professors Clayton McCarl (Spanish) and Chris Baynard (Geography and GIS), respectively. On Thursday, April 21, and Monday, April 25, students majoring in History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology participated in additional TEI-XML workshops in order to begin transcribing and encoding manuscript materials for coloniaLab, a DHI affiliate project.

On Tuesday, April 19, students in SPN3351 Communication and Communities for Speakers of Spanish discussed their experiences interviewing members of the local Hispanic community. Their interviews will become part of the oral history project Voces y Caras: Hispanic Communities of North Florida, an affiliate project of the DHI directed by Professor Constanza López (Spanish). On Friday, April 15, Cameron Adelsperger (English/Spanish) shared the electronic textual work he is conducting with coloniaLab at the Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research & Scholarship (SOARS) sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research.
