            Those of the slaves who 'felt the sperrite1 during a service<lb/> 
            must keep silence until after the service, when they could 'tell it<lb/> 
            to the deacon', a colored <choice><sic>n,ia.n</sic><corr>man</corr></choice> who <choice><sic>woul.d</sic><corr>would</corr></choice> listen to the confessions<lb/>

                <choice><sic>Jira Scott</sic><corr><name type="person">Mrs. Scott</name></corr></choice> remembers vividly the joy that she felt and other slaves <choice><sic>-e:xpressed</sic><corr>expressed</corr></choice> when first news of their emancipation wasebrough'ie<lb/>
                to them. Both she and her mistress were fearful·, she <choice><sic>sa.rs</sic><corr>says</corr></choice>; her<lb/> 
                mistress because she did not know what she <choice><sic>woul.d</sic><corr>would</corr></choice> do without her slaves, and <choice><orig>.</orig><reg/></choice><name type="person">Anna</name> because she thought the <choice><sic>_Union</sic><corr>Union</corr></choice> soldiers <choice><sic>woul.ld</sic><corr>would</corr></choice> ham <name type="person">Mrs. Dive</name>.                 Provisions intended <choice><sic>:f'or</sic><corr>for</corr></choice> the Confederate armies were broken open by the Union soldiers and their followers, and Aana•a mothe., to protect, her master, organized groups of slaves to •tote the meat from the box care ane hide it in dugouts under the mistress' <choice><sic>h.use</sic><corr>house</corr></choice>. This meat was later divided between Negroes and whites.<lb/>

                  A Provost Judge followed the advance of the <choice><sic>ai,ay</sic><corr>array</corr></choice>, and he <lb/>
