               There has been much discussion concerning the color of<lb/>
                  "<choice><orig>Angel</orig><reg>angel</reg></choice>" <choice><sic>statutes</sic><corr>statues</corr></choice><note type="editorial">We have corrected <mentioned>statutes</mentioned> to <mentioned>statues</mentioned> here, and in four additional instances below. In a similar case of word substitution, we find <mentioned>statuter</mentioned> in place of what ostensibly must be <mentioned>statuer</mentioned> in <ref target="http://violamuse.unfdhi.org/items/show/100">George H. Leaphart (2 of 2)</ref>.</note> <choice><orig>Which</orig><reg>which</reg></choice> are located at the main entrance of <name type="place" subtype="cemetery">Memo<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>rial <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>Cemetery</corr></choice></name>.<lb/>

                     <p style="indent">
               Upon an occasion, many years ago, a very outstanding person<lb/>
                        who spent h<supplied reason="ink faded or letter missing" cert="high">e</supplied>r early childhood in <name type="place" subtype="city">Jacksonville</name><choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> thought she saw<lb/>
                        "<choice><orig>Black</orig><reg>black</reg></choice> <choice><orig>Angels</orig><reg>angels</reg></choice>" in <name type="place" subtype="cemetery">Memorial <choice><sic>Cemetary</sic><corr>Cemetery</corr></choice></name><choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> as she rode by.<lb/>
                </p>
                     <p style="indent">
                        It is declared by an old ex&#8211;slave woman, who is now ninety&#8211;<lb break="no"/>one years old and who has lived over fifty years just a few hun<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>dred yards <choice><sic>form</sic><corr>from</corr></choice> the gates of the <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and who lived at her<lb/>
                        present home before a <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice> was in that <choice><sic>vacinity</sic><corr>vicinity</corr></choice>, that the an<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>gels have never been painted black.<lb/>
               </p>
                     <p style="indent">
                  She stated that a <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice> man by name of <name type="person">Castilinas</name> was the<lb/>
               former owner of the plot of land and had what he called "<name type="place" subtype="park">Sunset<lb/>
                        Park</name><choice><orig>".</orig><reg>."</reg></choice> He <choice><sic>aftewwards</sic><corr>afterwards</corr></choice> turned it into a <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice> for Negroes<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and the<lb/>
                        name was changed to <mentioned><name type="place" subtype="cemetery">Memorial <choice><sic>Cemetary</sic><corr>Cemetery</corr></choice></name></mentioned>. In beautifying the <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
                        he had placed on the main <choice><orig>drive way</orig><reg>driveway</reg></choice> stone pillars upon which <choice><sic>statu<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>tes</sic><corr>statues</corr></choice><!-- <note type="editorial">Here again we correct <mentioned>statutes</mentioned> to <mentioned>statues</mentioned>.</note>-->
                        
                        of angels rested. There were originally two on each side of<lb/>
                  the <choice><orig>drive way</orig><reg>driveway</reg></choice>, and one in the middle and at the end of the drive.<lb/>
                        Each opposite pair were alike and the fifth<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> or "<choice><orig>Special</orig><reg>special</reg></choice> <choice><orig>Angel</orig><reg>angel</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>" as<lb/>
                  she termed it<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> held a sceptre in her right with a star at <choice><sic>it’s</sic><corr>its</corr></choice><lb/>
                  tip, and pointing toward the <choice><orig>sun&#8211;set</orig><reg>sunset</reg></choice>.<lb/>
               </p>
                     <p style="indent">
                  As years went by and the <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice> changed hands<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>  the angel<lb/>
                  <choice><sic>statutes</sic><corr>statues</corr></choice>

                        were moved from their original places<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>  and four were placed<lb/>
               just outside of the main gate, upon the four posts of the stone<lb/>
               fence. Although weather conditions have caused decay and parts of<lb/>
               <choice><orig>the arms</orig><reg/></choice><lb/>

            the arms, toes<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and garments have decayed and fallen apart, there is<lb/>
                        one with hands held <choice><orig>palm to palm</orig><reg>palm&#8211;to&#8211;palm</reg></choice> and raised in attitude of prayer.<lb/>
            The one placed opposite has enough of arms left to assure one that<lb/>
            the hands formerly were in same position. This is true also of the<lb/>
            other two which occupy the first posts on either side of the en<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>trance. 
                        They show by the position of that part of arms which still<lb/>
            remain that something was held in arms<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> such as a bundle of wheat or<lb/>
            the like. The fifth<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> or <choice><orig/><reg>"</reg></choice><choice><orig>Special</orig><reg>special</reg></choice> <choice><orig>Angel</orig><reg>angel</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,"</reg></choice> has been moved to the center<lb/>
            of the old part of the <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice>. A brick pillar was erected and this<lb/>
            angel placed upon the pillar. The arm<del type="strikeout">s</del> which held the sceptre still<lb/>
            remains but the hand<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> sceptre<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and star are gone. None of the five<lb/>
                        <choice><sic>statutes</sic><corr>statues</corr></choice><!--<note type="editorial">Again we correct <mentioned>statutes</mentioned> to <mentioned>statues</mentioned>.</note>--> have wings at present<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but the place where they were attached<lb/>
            show plainly, although from time to time, in recent years, a coat of<lb/>
            white wash has been applied<choice><orig>.</orig><reg/></choice> to them.<lb/>
         </p>
                     <p style="indent">
                        The <choice><sic>statutes</sic><corr>statues</corr></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><!--<note type="editorial">Again we correct <mentioned>statutes</mentioned> to <mentioned>statues</mentioned>.</note>--> because of their location under shade trees<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> be<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>came dark<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and probably at time they were viewed in this condition<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
            it appeared that they had been painted black.<lb/>
         </p>
                     <p style="indent">
            <name type="place" subtype="cemetery">Memorial <choice><sic>Cemetary</sic><corr>Cemetery</corr></choice></name>, now owned by the <name type="institution" subtype="non-profit">Memorial <choice><sic>Cemetary</sic><corr>Cemetery</corr></choice> <choice><abbr>Assn</abbr><expan>Association</expan></choice></name><choice><orig>.</orig><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
            a Negro organization<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> with <name type="person">Mr. <choice><orig>A. L.</orig><reg>A.L.</reg></choice> Lewis</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <choice><abbr>Pres.</abbr><expan>president</expan></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> has a <choice><orig>care taker</orig><reg>caretaker</reg></choice><lb/>
            who lives in the <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice>. <choice><orig>Tomb stones</orig><reg>Tombstones</reg></choice> are all around his house and<lb/>
            some not over fifteen feet from his front door. The <choice><sic>cemetary</sic><corr>cemetery</corr></choice> is<lb/>
                        located at <name type="place" subtype="address">the intersection of Edgewood and Moncrief <choice><abbr>Aves.</abbr><expan>Avenues</expan></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> just a few<lb/>
                        hundred yards beyond <name type="place" subtype="springs">Moncrief Springs</name> on <choice><sic>way</sic><corr/></choice> highway which leads to <name type="place" subtype="city">Way<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>cross, <choice><abbr>Ga.</abbr><expan>Georgia</expan></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg> &#8212;</reg></choice> <name type="place" subtype="highway">Florida <choice><abbr>No</abbr><expan>Number</expan></choice> 1</name><choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice><lb/>
