             </p>
         <p style="indent">Slavery, from as far back as Biblical times, through <lb/>
            the <choice><orig>Centuries</orig><reg>centuries</reg></choice> to Medieval history and down to Negro slavery in<lb/> 
             <name type="place">America</name>, which every school child can discuss as a remote occu<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>rance, is not as far removed as it may seem in this progressive<lb/>
                and civilized country. Particularly interesting information<lb/>
                can be drawn from the untutored <choice><sic>mindof</sic><corr>mind of</corr></choice> an ex-slave who still po<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>sesses a keen and unbroken memory of happenings during slavery <lb/>
            and early <choice><orig>reconstruction</orig><reg>Reconstruction</reg></choice> days of our country. <lb/>
                </p>
         <p style="indent">Facts concerning incidents which <choice><sic>History</sic><corr>history</corr></choice> records, inter<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>spersed with individual experiences of joy and sorrow, paint a<lb/>
            picture before the <choice><sic>minds</sic><corr>minds'</corr></choice> eye which rivals the most striking paint<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>ings of the old artists who portrayed the life and activity of the <lb/>
             <name type="place">Southern plantation</name> during slavery.<lb/>
         </p>

          <p style="indent"><name type="person">Anna Scott</name> was born at <name type="place">Dove City</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
              <name type="place">South Carolina</name>, <date when="1846-01-28"><choice><abbr>Jan.</abbr><expan>January</expan></choice> 28,<lb/>
                 1846</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> of a <choice><sic>half breed</sic><corr>half-breed</corr></choice> <name type="person_group">Cherokee Indian</name> and Negro mother. Her father<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
              an <name type="person">Anglo-Saxon</name>, was the owner of a plantation adjoining that of <lb/>
            Anna’s mother. When Anna reached the <choice><sic>adloscent</sic><corr>adolescent</corr></choice> age<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> she was placed<lb/> 
             under direct care of her mistress, <name type="person">Mrs. Abigail Dove</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and was given<lb/> 
                charge of the dining room and also trusted with the keys to all <lb/>
                provisions and some other valuables of the household.<lb/>
         </p>
         <p style="indent">By virtue of the close association of the slave girl and <lb/>
            her mistress, for Anna claims to have gone <choice><orig>every where</orig><reg>everywhere</reg></choice>  her mistress <lb/>
            went, a kindred love grew between them. Anna was kept in <choice><sic>the’big</sic><corr>the "big</corr></choice> <lb/>
            <choice><sic>house '</sic><corr>house<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>"</corr></choice> as the master’s home was termed by slaves. She was a trusted <lb/>
            servant and had sympathetic feeling for her brothers in slavery. <lb/>
                Although her mistress was continually with her, she was denied <lb/>
            the <choice><sic>privelage</sic><corr>privilege</corr></choice> of an education which some mistresses willingly gave <lb/>
            their slaves. However<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> she and <choice><sic>otherslaves</sic><corr>other slaves</corr></choice>  were allowed to attend <lb/>
            revival and other church services. The white people <gap reason="paper torn"/><lb/>

                slaves to occupy the balcony of the church in <name type="place">Dove City</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
            <choice><abbr>S.C.</abbr><expan><name type="place">South Carolina</name></expan></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
               where Anna was held as slave. The <choice><orig>Whites</orig><reg>whites</reg></choice>  occupied the main<lb/>
               floor and the slaves were forbidden to sing, talk<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
               or make a<lb/>
            sound. To do either meant a terrible whipping or worse punish<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>ment.<lb/>
            </p>
         <p style="indent">If by the preaching a slave felt the Spirit of <name type="person">God</name> permeat<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>ing her being, she was restrained from making an outcry or con<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>fession in the midst of the <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice> people. She was obliged to keep<lb/>
                silent until she got out in the open and could meet the Negro<lb/>
            <name type="person_group"><choice><orig>Deacon</orig><reg>deacon</reg></choice></name>, who would listen to her profession of religion.<lb/>
                  </p>
         <p style="indent">The Negro <name type="person_group"><choice><orig>Deacon</orig><reg>deacon</reg></choice> </name> would<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> in turn<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> relay the incident to the <lb/>
            <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice>  <name type="person_group"><choice><orig>Deacons</orig><reg>deacons</reg></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> who would have the converts meet in the vestry room<lb/>
            of the <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice>  church. Such questions as these would be asked<choice><orig>.</orig><reg> &#8212;</reg></choice>

         <p style="indent">After such questions, the <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice> <choice><orig>Deacon</orig><reg>deacon</reg></choice> set a day<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and all <lb/>
            candidates were baptized in the creek<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> or ford of a river.<lb/>
         </p>
         <p style="indent">When slaves wanted to hold their church meetings<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice><lb/>
            people allowed them to use the log <choice><orig>school house</orig><reg>schoolhouse</reg></choice><choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> for white chil<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>dren. A <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice> <name type="person">preacher</name> instructed them concerning the Bible and<lb/>
            every means was used to keep the <choice><orig>slaves</orig><reg>slaves'</reg></choice>  mind in attitude of sub<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>mission and <choice><sic>obidience</sic><corr>obedience</corr></choice>.<lb/>
         </p>
         <p style="indent">Immediately after Anna's conversion, she claims to have had <lb/>
            a vision one evening while sitting on the porch of <supplied reason="text smudged" cert="medium"><unclear>her home. <choice><orig>She</orig><reg/></choice></unclear></supplied><lb/>

         <p style="indent">When <choice><orig>F</orig><reg>f</reg></choice>reedom was declared, Anna had been prepared spiri<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>tually to realize the <choice><sic>significanof</sic><corr>significance of</corr></choice>  what it meant to be <choice><orig>F</orig><reg>f</reg></choice>ree, and<lb/>
             to appreciate the <choice><orig>A</orig><reg>a</reg></choice>ct of <name type="person">Abraham Lincoln</name> when he signed the<lb/>
             Emancipation Proclamation, and when <name type="person_group">Sherman’s Army</name> marched through<lb/>
             <name type="place">Georgia</name> and on to <name type="place">South Carolina</name>. She related with warmth and <choice><sic>f</sic><corr></corr></choice> <lb/>
             feeling the joy of the Negroes when the <name type="person_group">Union <choice><sic>army</sic><corr>Army</corr></choice></name>  bore the glad<lb/>
            tidings of great joy that all <choice><sic>slavesshackles</sic><corr>slaves' shackles</corr></choice>  had been broken<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and<lb/>
                Negroes were free indeed. She related the fear and anxiety of her<lb/>
             young mistress upon hearing of the approach of <name type="person_group">Sherman’s Army</name>.<lb/>
         </p>
         <p style="indent">The mistress of Anna did not know what to do when the news<lb/>
            came to her of the approach<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and fear possessed her. Anna was fear<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>ful lest harm should befall her mistress<choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice>
            <choice><orig>b</orig><reg>B</reg></choice>ut when the head officer<lb/>
            in charge of the <choice><sic>squarron</sic><corr>squadron</corr></choice>  reached her home and marched up to the<lb/>
            front door and demanded entrance, he spied a ring upon the mis<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>tress’ finger. He lifted her hand and looked scrutinizingly at the<lb/>
             ring of a <name type="person">Master Mason</name>, asking, “<choice><orig>w</orig><reg>W</reg></choice>here did you get this<choice><sic> “ ?</sic><corr>?"</corr></choice>  The<lb/>
             mistress said, "It was my husband’s. I am now the widow of <name type="person">Daniel<lb/>
                 Dove</name><choice><orig>;</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> <choice><orig>my</orig><reg>My</reg></choice> name is <name type="person">Abigail Dove</name>." The commanding officer turned to<lb/>
            his men, threw up his hand in protest and said,"“<choice><orig>g</orig><reg>G</reg></choice>et back! <choice><orig>s</orig><reg>S</reg></choice>he is <lb/>
            <choice><orig>alright</orig><reg>all right</reg></choice><choice><sic>".</sic><corr>."</corr></choice> <lb/>
         </p>
         <p style="indent">At that same time<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the <choice><orig>union</orig><reg>Union</reg></choice> soldiers broke open <choice><orig>>box cars</orig><reg>boxcars</reg></choice><lb/>
                which held provisions of the Confederates and distributed to the<lb/>
            slaves<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> these provisions and other property they had confiscated<lb/>
             along their march. Anna related how her mother, <name type="person">Sarah Dove</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> also a<lb/>
                slave of the Dove family, sent the Negroes to get meat and how she<lb/>
            and her brother “toted meat all day and all night<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and hid it in<lb/>
            <choice><orig>dug outs</orig><reg>dugouts</reg></choice> under the mistress’ house.”<lb/>
