               Immediately after <choice><orig>Slavery</orig><reg>slavery</reg></choice> in the<lb/>
               <name type="place" subtype="nation"><ptr target="united-states-of-america"/>United States</name>, the Southern <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice> people<lb/>
               found themselves without servants<lb/>
               to come at every bidding. Women who<lb/>
               were accustomed to a nurse, a maid<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
               a cook, <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice>  laundress found themselves<lb/>
               without sufficient money to pay wages<lb/>
               to all these. There was much work to be<lb/>
               done<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and a great problem confronted<lb/>
               the pompered<note type="contextual" subtype="lexical">See <ref target="https://unfdhi.org/violamuse-editions/content/common-annotations.xml#pomper"><mentioned>pomper</mentioned></ref>.</note> married woman, who had<lb/>
               never been taught to work and who<lb/>
               thought it a disgrace to soil her hands.<lb/>
            </p>
            <p style="indent">
               There were many Negro women who<lb/>
               needed work<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and even more than that, a<lb/>
               home and someone to look after them<lb/>
               and guide them.<lb/>
            </p>
            <p style="indent">
               The home and guidance of the<lb/>
               aristocratic <choice><orig>White</orig><reg>white</reg></choice> people offered the<lb/>
               best opportunity for the dependent,<lb/>
               unschooled freed woman<choice><orig>.</orig><reg>,</reg></choice> and it was<lb/>
               in this kind of home that the ex-slave<lb/>
               woman I am writing of<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> was reared.<lb/>

               Adams to Broad Street. The house of this 
               ground faced Bridge Street and in the 
               yard running back to Clay <del type="strikeout">Street</del>were<lb/>
               orange trees and grapevines.

               There were no fine houses in Jacks<choice><orig>-</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>onville at that time, the California style 
               houses with the flanks running vertically<lb/>
               being the only kind built.<lb/>

               Down Bridge Street on the corner<lb/>
               of Forsythe, where Oaks <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice>Peter's Shoe<lb/>
               Store now stands in the year 1936<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
               stood an old <choice><sic>gritts</sic><corr>grits</corr></choice> mill,which was<lb/>
               operated by a wheel turned by water<lb break="no"/><lb/>
               power. There Coates saw <choice><sic>gritts</sic><corr>grits</corr></choice> ground<lb/> 
               many times at that old mill.<lb/>
            </p>
            <p>
               There the Broad Street<unclear cert="low" reason="word is difficult to read."></unclear><lb/>runs<lb/>
               across the railroad tracks was<lb/> 
               in Irene's early life<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>a wooden foot<lb/>
               bridge. Before the land was filled in<lb/>
               <unclear cert="low" reason="page ripped."></unclear>the McCoy Creek was confined to<lb/>
               its present narrow boundaries the<lb/>
                creek occupied all the section where the railroad tracks are south of Bay Street.<lb/>
               It continued taking in Bay Street and<lb/>
               <unclear cert="low" reason="page ripped."></unclear> between Bridge and Jefferson Streets on<lb/>
               <unclear cert="high" reason="page ripped.">not</unclear><lb/> covering the spot where the colored<lb/>
            </p>

               The creek continued over to where <name type="institution" subtype="educational"><name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="stanton-school"/>Stanton<lb/>
              High School</name></name> stands<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and on the banks of<lb/>
               the creek at this point<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Irene</name> often carried<lb/>
               the baby for a walk and platted wild<lb/> 
               grass and played in the creek.<lb/>
            </p>

               Continuing over to <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="beaver-street"/>Beaver</name> between<lb/>
               <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="broad-street"/>Broad</name> and <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="clay-street"/>Clay</name><del type="strikeout"> Streets</del>, where <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="lawton-pratt-funeral-home"/><name type="person">Lawton<lb/>
               L. Pratt's</name> Undertaking <choice><orig>establishment</orig><reg>Establishment</reg></choice></name> is<lb/>
               <del type="strikeout">stands</del> <add type="no_caret">located</add><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the creek bent in its course and<lb/>

               <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="clay-street"/>Clay </name> continued and flowed<lb/>
               through to <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="state-street"/>State</name>, over <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="clay-street"/>Clay</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> to cover spot<lb/>
               where <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="grants-memorial-ame-church"/>Grant's Memorial Church</name> now<lb/>
               stands <add type="no_caret">at <name type="place" subtype="address"><ptr target="intersection-of-clay-and-orange"/><name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="clay-street"/>Clay</name> and <unclear><name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="orange-street"/>Orange</name></unclear> <choice><abbr>Strs.</abbr><expan>Streets</expan></choice></name></add>. The creek covered a great part<lb/>
               of the section now <choice><sic>know</sic><corr>known</corr></choice> as <name type="place" subtype="neighborhood"><ptr target="black-bottom"/>Black Botto<supplied reason="page torn" cert="medium">m</supplied></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>

               In the downtown section where<lb/>
               <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="cohens-store"/>Cohen's Store</name> is located was <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="st-james-hotel"/><name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/>Jackson<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>ville's</name>
               only hotel</name>, a <choice><orig>three (or four) story</orig><reg>three&#8211; or four&#8211;story</reg></choice><lb/>
               brick building painted white. The rest<lb/>
               of the section was woods.<lb/>

               East of <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="cohens-store"/>Cohen's</name> block and north<lb/>
               to <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="union-street"/>Union Street</name> where <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="mt-zion-ame-church"/><name type="institution" subtype="religious"/>Mt<choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice> Zion African<lb/>
               Methodist Episcopal Church</name> is located<lb/>
               <add type="caret">at <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="market-street"/>Market</name> <choice><orig>&amp;</orig><reg>and</reg></choice> <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="union-street"/>Union</name></add>
               was an <name type="place" subtype="grove"><ptr target="oak-grove"/><choice><orig>Oak Grove</orig><reg>oak grove</reg></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <choice><orig>^</orig><reg/></choice><add type="caret"><name type="person">Irene</name> remembers that</add> <del type="strikeout">the</del> a few of<lb/>
               Negroes who lived in <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/>Jacksonville</name> at<lb/>
               that time held church in a log cabin<lb/>
               on that spot.<lb/>

               There was one depot for trains in<lb/>
               <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/>Jacksonville</name> when <name type="person">Irene Coates</name> arrived<lb/>
               here, and the tracks ran down <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="bridge-street"/>Bridge <choice><abbr>St</abbr><expan>Street</expan></choice></name> turned at<lb/>
                  <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="forsyth-street"/><choice><sic><unclear>Forsythe</unclear></sic><corr>Forsyth</corr></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>

               There were no stores there at that time<lb/>
               and none in that section.<lb/>

               Out west on <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="bay-street"/>Bay Street</name> where the<lb/>
               <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="union-depot"/>Union Depot</name> is located<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> a <name type="place" subtype="pond"><ptr target="fish-pond"/>fish pond</name><lb/>
               occupied that spot<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <name type="person">Irene</name> saw<lb/>
               many nets pulled in loaded with fish.<lb/>

               at this point flowed <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice> joined <name type="place" subtype="creek"><ptr target="hogan-creek"/>Hogan Creek</name>.<lb/>
               She saw men throw nets <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice> draw in<lb/>

               to fill in that part of the town which<lb/>
               the preceding paragraphs showed was<lb/>
                  covered by water, <choice><orig>boat load</orig><reg>boatload</reg></choice> after <choice><orig>boat <lb/> load</orig><reg>boat<lb break="no"/>load</reg></choice>
                  <add type="no_caret">of sand</add> was hauled in from <name type="place" subtype="state"><ptr target="georgia"/>Georgia</name>.<lb/>
                  The <name type="place" subtype="creek"><ptr target="mccoy-creek"/>McCoy <choice><orig>creek</orig><reg>Creek</reg></choice></name> was pushed back<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <name type="place" subtype="street"><ptr target="bay-street"/>Bay<lb/>
               Street</name> was made. So were the other parts which<lb/>
               had previously been water.<lb/>

               township then called <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="lavilla"/><choice><orig>La Villa</orig><reg>LaVilla</reg></choice></name>. <unclear>That</unclear> section<lb/>
               of <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/><choice><abbr>Jax</abbr><expan>Jacksonville</expan></choice></name> is still referred to as <name type="place" subtype="neighborhood"><ptr target="lavilla"/><choice><orig>La Villa</orig><reg>LaVilla</reg></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but<lb/>
