               locating at <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="crescent-city-fl"/>Crescent City</name>, then to <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="st-augustine-fl"/>St<choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice> Augus<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>tine</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and finally<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/>Jacksonville</name>. He engaged<lb/>
               in various kinds of work<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> such as boilermaker<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
               truck driver, barrack building<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and heat riveting<choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice><lb/>

               In <date when="1918">1918</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he enlisted in the <name type="institution" subtype="military"><!--<name type="place" subtype="nation"><ptr target="united-states-of-america"/>-->United States<!--</name>--><lb/>
                  <choice><orig>army</orig><reg>Army</reg></choice></name><choice><orig> &#8212;</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> <choice><orig>was</orig><reg>Was</reg></choice> stationed at <name type="place" subtype="base"><ptr target="camp-joseph-e-johnston"/>Camp Johnson</name><note type="contextual" subtype="historical"><mentioned>Camp Johnson</mentioned> is likely Camp Joseph E. Johnston, which acted as an Army training camp from October 15, 1917, to May 16, 1919. In 1940, it was reopened as Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the name by which it is still known today.                vocations until <date when="1921">1921</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> when he began making<lb/>
               small pieces of household furniture. His<lb/>
               scope now includes artistically decorated<lb/>
               card tables, end tables, book racks, book<lb/>
               troughs, combination endtables and book troughs<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
               talking machine cabinets, ladies<choice><orig/><reg>'</reg></choice> and children's<lb/>
               desks, <choice><sic>brick&#8211;a&#8211;brack</sic><corr>bric&#8211;a&#8211;brac</corr></choice> stands, wall shelves<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and<lb/>
               smoking cabinets and stands. The manner in<lb/>
               which he blends the different shades of varnish<lb/>
               gives his work the appearance of <choice><orig>in&#8211;lay</orig><reg>inlay</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and<lb/>
               the hand<choice><orig> </orig><reg>-</reg></choice>scalloped decoration used on racks<lb/>
               and shelves give individuality to his work.<lb/>
