            <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="lavilla"/><choice><orig>"</orig><reg/></choice><choice><orig>La Villa</orig><reg>LaVilla</reg></choice><choice><orig>"</orig><reg/></choice></name>, a section of the city<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> very close<lb/>
            now to the heart of town, was a sepa<choice><orig>&#8211;</orig><reg/></choice><lb break="no"/>rate 
            township, he lived in that<lb/>
            part of the community. He tells<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> in the<lb/>
            most interesting manner<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the life of<lb/>
            the <choice><orig>negro</orig><reg>Negro</reg></choice> and <del type="strikeout">his</del> the part he played<lb/>
            in <del style="strikeout">&amp;</del> making the city. The political part<lb/>
            <choice><orig>negroes</orig><reg>Negroes</reg></choice> played is in such contrast to the<lb/>
            present<choice><orig> </orig><reg>&#8211;</reg></choice>day situation<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and the feeling<lb/>
            between the races <del type="strikeout">is in</del> then and now<lb/>

            education through <choice><orig>High</orig><reg>high</reg></choice> <choice><orig>School</orig><reg>school</reg></choice> at <name type="place" subtype="building"><ptr target="stanton-school"/><name type="institution" subtype="educational">Stanton</name></name><choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice><lb/>
               Finished <name type="place" subtype="campus"><ptr target="clark-university"/><name type="institution" subtype="educational"><name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="atlanta-ga"/>Atlanta</name> <choice><abbr>Uni</abbr><expan>University</expan></choice></name></name><choice><orig>;</orig><reg>.</reg></choice> <choice><orig>ten</orig><reg>Ten</reg></choice> years later<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> his<lb/>
            alma mater conferred upon him the degree of <choice><abbr>M.A</abbr><expan>Master of Arts</expan></choice>.<lb/>
               He continued his studies at <name type="place" subtype="campus"><ptr target="columbia-university"/><name type="institution" subtype="educational">Columbia <choice><abbr>Uni</abbr><expan>University</expan></choice></name></name><choice><orig/><reg>.</reg></choice><lb/>
               Both <name type="place" subtype="campus"><ptr target="talladega-college"/><name type="institution" subtype="educational">Talladega</name></name> <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice> <name type="place" subtype="campus"><ptr target="howard-university"/><name type="institution" subtype="educational">Howard <choice><abbr>Uni</abbr><expan>University</expan></choice></name></name> conferred upon him<lb/>
            the degree of Doctor of Letters. Seven <choice><abbr>yrs</abbr><expan>years</expan></choice> after<lb/>
                  graduating from <name type="place" subtype="campus"><ptr target="atlanta-university"/><name type="institution" subtype="educational">Atlanta <choice><abbr>Uni.</abbr><expan>University</expan></choice></name></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he was principal<lb/>
               of public <choice><orig>School</orig><reg>school</reg></choice> in <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/><choice><abbr>Jax</abbr><expan>Jacksonville</expan></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <del type="strikeout">taught</del> with tact<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
            due to his outstanding qualities<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he raised the<lb/>

            Meanwhile<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he studied law and was admitted<lb/>
               to the <name type="institution" subtype="professional">Florida Bar</name>. While still in <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="jacksonville-fl"/><choice><abbr>Jax</abbr><expan>Jacksonville</expan></choice></name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
            he began<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> with his brother <name type="person">Rosamond Johnson</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
            that collaboration in <choice><orig>Song</orig><reg>song</reg></choice><choice><orig> </orig><reg>&#8211;</reg></choice> <choice><orig>Making</orig><reg>making</reg></choice> which<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
            in the next few years<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> proved so successful.<lb/>
            In <date when="1900">1900</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he wrote the words to <title level="a"><choice><orig>"</orig><reg/></choice>Lift Every<lb/>
               Voice and Sing<choice><orig>"</orig><reg/></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice></title> while <name type="person">Rosamond</name> set it to<lb/>
            music. While this hymn became the "Negro<lb/>
            National Anthem<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>" it was originally composed<lb/>
            for a group of school children preparing<lb/>
            for <name type="event"><name type="person">Lincoln</name>’s Birthday Exercises</name>. “Its noble<lb/>
            words and swelling music made it deservedly<lb/>
            popular and is now regularly sung in<lb/>
            Negro <choice><orig>Schools</orig><reg>schools</reg></choice> and <choice><orig>Colleges</orig><reg>colleges</reg></choice> throughout <del type="strikeout">of</del> the<lb/>
            country.” In <date when="1901">1901</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> with <name type="person">Rosamond</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> removed<lb/>
            to <name type="place" subtype="city"><ptr target="new-york-ny"/>New York</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and they together wrote music<lb/>
            for <choice><orig>Musical</orig><reg>musical</reg></choice> <choice><orig>Comedy</orig><reg>comedy</reg></choice> shows, the famous<lb/>
            <name type="person">Williams</name> <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice> <name type="person">Walker</name> among them. He aspired<lb/>
            for higher things and<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> in <date when="1906">1906</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> became the<lb/>
