		    <name type="person">Mrs. Rebecca <choice><orig>Mc. Intosh</orig><reg>McIntosh</reg></choice> Fulton</name> was born at <name type="place"><choice><orig>Mc Intosh</orig><reg>McIntosh</reg></choice><lb/>
			County</name>, <name type="place" subtype="state">Georgia</name> several years before the emancipation of the Negro.<lb/>
			She knows her exact birth date but will not tell it.<lb/>
		 </p>
		 
		 <p style="indent">
		    <name type="person">Rebecca</name> is the daughter of <name type="person">Louisa Sams</name> and <name type="person">John M. <choice><orig>Mc In</orig><reg>McIn</reg></choice><lb break="no"/>tosh</name> 
		    (white). Her maternal <choice><orig>grand parents</orig><reg>grandparents</reg></choice> were <name type="person">Felix</name> and <name type="person">Nanny Sams</name>.<lb/>
		    Her <choice><orig>great grand parents</orig><reg>great-grandparents</reg></choice> were <name type="person">Doctor William</name> and <name type="person">Sally Sams</name>. <name type="person">Rebecca</name><lb/>
			did not take the name of her own father but carried her mother's<lb/>
		    name until she married <name type="person">Mr. Fulton</name>.<lb/>
		 </p>
		 
		 <p style="indent">
		    <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> knows or rather has the written history of<lb/>
			her family as far back as <date when="1782">1782</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and dates of births and deaths which<lb/>
			occured in the family from that date are recorded up to <date when="1867">1867</date>. The<lb/>
			old family Bible contains the record of these incidents and were<lb/>
			transferred from a much older Bible. The older Bible became so old<lb/>
			and ragged some member of the past generations thought it wise to<lb/>
		    transfer them to a newer book. <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> has this book<choice><orig>.</orig><reg>, </reg></choice>which<lb/>
			was printed in <date when="1855">1855</date>. In the <choice><orig>fly leaf</orig><reg>flyleaf</reg></choice> of this Bible are these words<choice><orig>-</orig><reg>:</reg></choice><lb/>
			<choice><orig>" Holy</orig><reg>"Holy</reg></choice> Bible containing the Old and New Testaments together with the<lb/>
			Apocrypha translated out of the original tongues and with the former<lb/>
			translations diligently compared and revised, to which is appended a<lb/>
			concordance, The Psalms of David in metre, an index, tables and other<lb/>
			useful matters. The text conformable to the standard of the <name type="group">American<lb/>
			   Bible Society</name> at <name type="place">Cincinnati</name> <name type="person"><choice><orig>( Moore</orig><reg>(Moore</reg></choice></name>, <name type="person">Welstach</name>, <name type="person">Keys</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <name type="person">Overend</name>.)<lb/>

         <name type="person">Dr. Williams Sams</name>, <name type="person">Rebecca's</name> great-<choice><orig>grand-father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> was born some years<lb/>
			before <date when="1782">1782</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> for <date when="1782">1782</date> is the birth year of his first child. It is not<lb/>
			known how old he was when his <choice><orig>first born</orig><reg>firstborn</reg></choice> came into the world<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but it<lb/>
			is reasonable to believe that he was a man who had attained the age<lb/>
			where he had wisdom enough and experience enough to leave his native<lb/>
         country, stop by <name type="place">Haiti</name> and buy two woman<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and proceed on to <name type="place">America</name>.<lb/>
		</p>
		
		<p style="indent">
		   According to <name type="person">Rebecca's</name> <choice><orig>grand mother's</orig><reg>grandmother's</reg></choice> story<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he came from <choice><orig>'</orig><reg/></choice><name type="place">Cologne,<lb/>
			South America</name>, and landed at <name type="place">Lady Island</name>, <name type="place">South Carolina</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> bringing<lb/>
		   with him two sisters, <name type="person">Sallie</name> and <name type="person">Hannah</name>. They both were dark com<del type="strikeout">lect</del><lb break="no"/>plexioned,
		   looking very much like Indians. They were reputed to have<lb/>
		   come from <name type="place">Haiti</name>. <name type="person">Hannah</name> married a Negro man<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <name type="person">Dr. Sams</name> took <name type="person">Sally</name><lb/>
			for his wife<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <choice><orig>shebore</orig><reg>she bore</reg></choice> him twelve children, some of which died in<lb/>
			their infancy and others who grew to maturity. Those who lived until<lb/>
		   they became grown were <name type="person">Hanibal</name>, <name type="person">Henry</name>, <name type="person">Joseph</name>, <name type="person">Lucious</name>, <name type="person">Robert</name>, <name type="person">Felix</name>,<lb/>
		   <name type="person">Rebecca</name>, <name type="person">Susan</name>, <name type="person">Betty</name>, <name type="person">Sally</name>, and <name type="person">Mary</name>.<lb/>
		</p>
		
		
		<p style="indent">
		   "<name type="person">Dr. Sams</name> moved <name type="person">Sally</name> and the children from <name type="place">Lady Island</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="place">South Caro<lb break="no"/>lina</name>
		   to <name type="place"><choice><orig>Mc Intosh</orig><reg>McIntosh</reg></choice> County</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="place">Georgia</name> at the opening of <name type="place">Georgia</name>. <name type="person">Hanibal</name><lb/>
		   and <name type="person">Joseph</name> were killed by a falling house on <name type="place">Saplo Island</name>, <name type="place"><choice><orig>Mc Intosh</orig><reg>McIntosh</reg></choice><lb/>
		      County</name>, <name type="place">Georgia</name>. <name type="person">Dr. Sams</name> contracted a large debt, realized he would<lb/>
		   loose all his real estate, slaves<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and his children, left <name type="place">Georgia</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and<lb/>
		   under the Law of <name type="place">Georgia</name>, on a dark night, he left the <name type="place">United States</name><lb/>
		   in a sail boat. <choice><orig>took</orig><reg>Took</reg></choice> <name type="person">Sally</name> and his daughters and the youngest boy,<lb/>
		   <name type="person">Robert</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> with him and expected <name type="person">Lucious</name> and <name type="person">Felix</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the older boys<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> to come<lb/>
		   the next night, but debtors heard of it and seized them."<lb/>
		</p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person"><choice><orig>" Dr.</orig><reg>"Dr.</reg></choice> Sams</name> arrived at <name type="place">Mount Vernon</name>, <name type="place">Florida</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and the two boys worked<lb/>
		   out the debt." After they had worked out the debt<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> they were free to<lb/>
		   go wherever they wished to go<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> so instead of following their parents<lb/> 
		   <del type="overwritten">to <name type="place">Florida</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> they remained in <name type="place">Georgia</name>.</del><lb/>

         to <name type="place">Florida</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> they remained in <name type="place">Georgia</name>. Now this child <name type="person">Felix</name> became the<lb/>
         <choice><orig>grand-father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice> of <name type="person">Rebecca <choice><sic>Fultom</sic><corr>Fulton</corr></choice></name>.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person">Felix</name> married <name type="person">Nanny Bailey</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and she bore four children for him, namely<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice><lb/>
         <name type="person">William</name>, <name type="person">Joseph</name>, <name type="person">Sally</name>, <name type="person">Louisa</name>. He married a second wife after her death<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
         and her name was <name type="person">Elsie</name>. <name type="person">Elsie</name> bore him five children, namely<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> <name type="person">Susan</name>, <name type="person">Felix</name>,<lb/>
         <name type="person">Richard</name>, <name type="person">Agnes</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <name type="person">Benjamin</name>. After <name type="person">Elsie</name> died<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he married <name type="person">Georgia</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and to<lb/>
         them <name type="person">Mary Felix</name> was born. Now <name type="person">Felix</name> daughter <name type="person">Louisa</name> by the first wife<lb/>
         became the mother of <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name>.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         The former information is recorded on two sheets of writing paper<lb/>
         written in ink by <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> at the dictation of her <choice><orig>grand-mother</orig><reg>grandmother</reg></choice>.<lb/>
         She has kept this information in the old family Bible and guards it<lb/>
         religiously, keeping it under two locks. She was very reluctant in show<lb break="no"/>ing
         it to the interviewer<choice><orig>;</orig><reg>,</reg></choice> but by quick reading enough was seen, to<lb/>
         the satisfaction of the writer.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         There is still a younger generation coming from the <choice><orig>grand-father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice><lb/>
         <name type="person">Felix Sams</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> for <name type="person">Louisa Sams</name> had a son <name type="person">Joseph</name> <name type="person"><choice><orig>( Rebecca </orig><reg>(Rebecca</reg></choice> Fulton's</name> brother)<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
         and he married <name type="person">Isabella Gardner</name> who bore three <choice><orig>children ,</orig><reg>children,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Vivian</name>, <name type="person">Louisa</name>,<lb/>
         and <name type="person">Gardner Sams</name>, all of which are living. <name type="person">Vivian</name> has married <name type="person">Nelson<lb/>
            Spaulding</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and to them one son<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Nelson Junior</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> was born. <name type="person">Gardner</name> married<lb/>
         <name type="person">Louise Vanderhorst</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and they have one child<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Gardner Sams Junior</name>. <name type="person">Louisa</name><lb/>
         married also<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but she has no children. Her married name is <name type="person">Louisa Belton</name>.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person">Felix <choice><orig>Sams ,</orig><reg>Sams,</reg></choice></name> <name type="person"><choice><orig>Rebecca's</orig><reg>Rebecca</reg></choice> Fulton's</name> <choice><orig>grand-father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> was born in <date when="1784-04-02">1784, April<lb/>
         <choice><abbr>2nd</abbr><expan>second</expan></choice></date>. Her mother was born about <date when="1832">1832</date> or <date when="1835">1835</date><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and she was the second child<lb/>
         her mother bore. Judging from what was said concerning her mother<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> it is<lb/>
         to be thought that she was around twenty-one when <name type="person">Rebecca</name> was born. This<lb/>
         would bring <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton's</name> age up to about eighty-one years, which<lb/>
         from all appearances is correct. 1<lb/>

         The interesting part of <name type="person"><choice><orig>Rebecca's</orig><reg>Rebecca</reg></choice> <choice><orig>fultons</orig><reg>Fulton's</reg></choice></name> <add type="caret">history</add> is not that many children<lb/> 
         were born for generations following <name type="person">Doctor Sams</name>, but that she has the<lb/>
         record of her family or what is called her "family tree". So few<lb/>
         Negroes<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> because of their previous condition in slavery and because no<lb/>
         records were kept of Negroes at that time, can give authentic infor<lb break="no"/>mation
         running as far back as does <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton's</name>. (2)<lb/>
      </p>
      <p>
         Then there is a record of all children born, since <name type="person">Doctor Sams</name> landed<lb/>
         at <name type="place">Lady Island</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="place">South Carolina</name>, of having been free born. None of <name type="person">Rebecca's</name><lb/> 
         <choice><orig>fore parents</orig><reg>foreparents</reg></choice> were ever held in slavery. Even her <choice><orig>grand-father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice> and her<lb/>
         <choice><orig>grand-father's</orig><reg>grandfather's</reg></choice> brother <name type="person">Lucious</name> remained in <name type="place">Georgia</name> and worked out their<lb/>
         father's debt, but when it was finished<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> they were free to go wherever<lb/>
         they wished. They were held for debt but not slaves. They<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> according to<lb/>
         <name type="person">Rebcca Fulton</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> were not treated as slaves<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but by the Law of the State<lb/>
         a man's children <choice><orig>( when</orig><reg>(when</reg></choice> he was not married to the woman) could be <choice><sic>seixed</sic><corr>seized</corr></choice><lb/>
         and held for <choice><orig>debt .</orig><reg>debt.</reg></choice> They could not be sold for debt<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> but could work the<lb/> 
         debt out, which they did.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p>
         After <name type="person">Felix</name> worked out his debt<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he bought property at <name type="place">Darian, Georgia</name><lb/>
         and built a fine<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> large house. When the <name type="event">Civil War</name> ended and the Federal<lb/>
         soldiers were victorious<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the house was burned. <name type="person">Felix</name> did not despair but<lb/>
         built a fourteen room house on the same spot. It is across the street<lb/>
         from where the <name type="place">Court House at Darian</name> stands <choice><orig>to-day</orig><reg>today</reg></choice>. This house was the<lb/> 
         place where the <choice><orig>firstcolored</orig><reg>first colored</reg></choice> school was held after slavery. It after<lb break="no"/>wards
         burned<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but another house has been built on the land<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and the <name type="person_group">Sams</name><lb/>
         own it today.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p>
         Of the children who came to <name type="place">Florida</name> with their father <name type="person">Doctor William<lb/> 
         Sams</name> , all had children, and their <choice><orig>grand children</orig><reg>grandchildren</reg></choice> or their great-grand<lb break="no"/>
         children are living <choice><orig>to-day</orig><reg>today</reg></choice>. <name type="person">Doctor Sam's</name> daughter <name type="person">Sally</name> married a man<lb/>
      </p>

         by the name of <name type="person">Daniels</name> and had two children, <name type="person">Josephus</name> and <name type="person">Angeline</name>.<lb/>
         In the old Bible<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> it is recorded that <name type="person">Angeline</name> died in <date when="1859">1859</date>. <name type="person">Jose<lb break="no"/>phus</name> 
            grew to <choice><orig>man hood</orig><reg>manhood</reg></choice> and married and had two <choice><orig>children,Sarah</orig><reg>children, <name type="person">Sarah</name></reg></choice> and<lb/>
            <name type="person">Bernie</name>. <name type="person">Sarah Daniels</name> had two children<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Ada</name> and <name type="person">Emma Daniels</name>. <choice><orig>( it</orig><reg>(it</reg></choice><lb/>
            seems that these children took their mother's maiden <choice><orig>name )</orig><reg>name)</reg></choice> <name type="person">Ada<lb/>
               Daniels</name> married <name type="person">Luther Walden</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and they have two sons, <name type="person">Luther Jr.</name> and<lb/>
            <name type="person">Virgil</name>.  The family resides in <name type="place">Jacksonville</name> on <name type="place">Kings Road</name> two blocks<lb/>
         west of <name type="place">Myrtle Avenue</name>.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         The property mentioned formerly as having been property of<lb/>
         some of the <name type="person_group">Sams family</name>, designated as located where the <name type="place">Emacu<lb break="no"/>lage
            Conception Church</name>, Catholic, now stands, was <name type="person">Ada Daniels Walden's</name><lb/>
         <choice><orig>grand father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice>, <name type="person">Josephus'</name> property. It remained in the <name type="person_group">Sams family</name> as<lb/>
         long as <name type="person">Josephus</name> lived<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but after his death<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the heirs began suit for<lb/>
         division of the property<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and it was finally lost to white people.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> related that her parents brought her here about<lb/>
         <date when="1879">1879</date> or <date when="1880">1880</date>. She remained in <name type="place">Jacksonville</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and her mother, who was<lb/>
         a fine seamstress, taught her the trade. From the trade<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Rebecca</name> made<lb/>
         a good sum of money which she saved through the years<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and when she<lb/>
         had <choice><sic>suffecient</sic><corr>sufficient</corr></choice>, she bought property. One piece in particular<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> which<lb/>
         she bought in her early life<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> is that upon which she lives <choice><orig>to-day</orig><reg>today</reg></choice>. It<lb/> 
         is located at <name type="place">the corner of Broad and Union Streets</name>. The <choice><orig>North east</orig><reg>Northeast</reg></choice><lb/>
         corner. On the land<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> she built a cottage and later added a second<lb/>
         story. The lower part now has a store in the front part, facing<lb/>
         <name type="place">Union Street</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and the part facing <name type="place">Broad Street</name> is an apartment where<lb/>
         her brother's children reside. The children are <name type="person">Vivian Sams Spaulding-<lb break="no"/>
            Chavious</name>, <name type="person">Louisa Sams Belton</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and <name type="person">Gardner Sams</name>. A great<choice><orig> </orig><reg>-</reg></choice>great<choice><orig> </orig><reg>-</reg></choice>great<lb/>
         <choice><orig>grand child</orig><reg>grandchild</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">Nelson Spaulding Jr.</name>, the child of <name type="person">Vivian Sams</name> by a former<lb/>
         husband, resides with his mother. This son <name type="person">Nelson</name> completes six gene<lb break="no"/>rations of <choice><sic>decendents</sic><corr>descendants</corr></choice> of D<lb/>

         In the history of <name type="person">Doctor Sams</name>, which <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> wrote after<lb/>
         the dictation of her <choice><orig>grand mother</orig><reg>grandmother</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> it is mentioned that after <name type="person">Doctor<lb/> 
            Sams</name> moved <name type="person">Sally</name> and the children from <name type="place">Darian, Georgia</name> to <name type="place"><choice><abbr>Mt.</abbr><expan>Mount</expan></choice> Vernon<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
         Florida</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he married. It is not known why he married her then after he<lb/>
         and <name type="person">Sally</name> had twelve children born to them<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> unless he feared that he<lb/>

         He might have done that to protect his family and keep them from<lb/> 
         being taken from him. By that act<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> he evidently loved <name type="person">Sally</name> and the<lb/>
         children very much, as much as any father who had stood up before a<lb/>
         minister and had the marriage ritual read to him. (1)<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> has the appearance of a Spanish woman. Her <choice><sic>comp<lb break="no"/>lezion</sic><corr>comp<lb break="no"/>lexion</corr></choice> is Spanish and her hair, which is very straight <choice><sic>anf</sic><corr>and</corr></choice> fine<lb/>
         in texture<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> shows that there is very little<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> if any<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> Negro blood in her<lb/>
         veins. Her features are between Indian and Scotch<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and her eyes are<lb/>
         brown. Her father was a Scotchman<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <name type="person">John M. <choice><orig>Mc Intosh</orig><reg>McIntosh</reg></choice></name>. In talking to<lb/>
         her a long time<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> many ways or traits which have been laid at the<lb/>
         Scotchman's door, so to speak, are her qualities. (2)<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         One splendid trait of <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton's</name> is the desire to keep<lb/> 
         and protect family records and family relics. She has many relics of<lb/> 
         her parents and <choice><orig>grand parents</orig><reg>granparents</reg></choice>, among them a Confederate five ($5.00)<lb/>
         dollar bill, an ink bottle made of pewter and wood. The ink bottle<lb/>
         is about two inches in length and and inch in width and about three<lb/>
         <choice><sic>eigth</sic><corr>eighth</corr></choice> inches in thickness. Pewter forms the ink container<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> which is<lb/>
         bound all around with a wooden frame about one quarter or more inches<lb/>
         in wide. The top part of ink bottle has a slit coming a third of the <lb/>
         distance from top to bottom of pewter part. The word push is on one<lb/>

         side<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> meaning that to open bottle<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> that part must be pushed in. On<lb/>
         the opposite side<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the words "push from other side" are found. The<lb/> 
         bottle is so old and has been out of use for so long that it is imposs<lb break="no"/>ible
         to operate it as in days gone by. It is presumed by the owner<lb/> 
         that quills were used for pens<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and the bottle and a quill carried<lb/>
         around on a person gave convenience for writing with ink wherever<lb/>
         the person happened to be. It is noteworthy also to mention that it<lb/>
         is an article which was patented in <name type="organizaton">United States Patent Office</name>. (1 <choice><abbr>&amp;</abbr><expan>and</expan></choice> 2)<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         A brass pin made of gold<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> which looks to be hand carved<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> is<lb/>
         in possession of <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name>. It is over one hundred years old.<lb/>
         She was presented the pin by her <choice><orig>grand mother</orig><reg>grandmother</reg></choice> and wears it most of<lb/>
         the time. The pin and catch are still in good condition.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person">Rebecca</name> also has kept a braid of her <choice><orig>grand mother's</orig><reg>grandmother's</reg></choice> hair and a<lb/> 
         braid of her great-<choice><orig>grand mother's</orig><reg>grandmother's</reg></choice> hair. Both braids are white, so white<lb/>
         that they resemble taffy candy. The <choice><orig>great grand mother's</orig><reg>great-grandmother's</reg></choice> hair is<lb/> 
         very fine and straight<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> but the <choice><orig>grand mother's</orig><reg>grandmother's</reg></choice> is somewhat fluffy<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> show<lb break="no"/>ing
         the strain of Negro blood.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         <name type="person">Rebecca Fulton</name> is a person who is considered a close liver. She<lb/>
         does not spend money unless it is absolutely necessary. By such a <lb/>
         quality<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> she has been able to accumulate a deal of property. Her love<lb/>
         for her family and all connected with their history is held sacred, so<lb/>
         much that she is reluctant to tell too much, especially if it will<lb/>
         seemingly relflect discredit to the ancestry of her's. She is not feeble<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice><lb/>
         but her skin shows age. Her hair<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <add type="caret">which</add> is perfectly white, <del type="strikeout">fine in texture<lb/>
         and very straight</del> <del type="strikeout">her</del> worn bobbed<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and she gives the impression of one<lb/>
         who desires to remain young. She is pleasing to talk to<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and if her<lb/>
         confidence is gained<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> she will spend hours talking about her family<lb/>
         history. All the time she talks<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> she guards every word less she gives<lb/>

         the listener a key to her right age. She remembers when women wore<lb/>
         hoop skirts and changed to narrow ones, yet does not remember when<lb/> 
         people cooked in <choice><orig>fire places</orig><reg>fireplaces</reg></choice>. She related that her people always<lb/>
         cooked on a stove as early as she can remember.<lb/>
      </p>
      <p style="indent">
         From <name type="person">Rebecca's</name> story of her father, <choice><orig>grand father</orig><reg>grandfather</reg></choice><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and great<choice><orig> </orig><reg>-</reg></choice>grand<lb/>
         father <choice><orig>( the</orig><reg>(the</reg></choice> <choice><sic>later</sic><corr>latter</corr></choice> she never saw)<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> they all were good to their families<lb/>
         and provided for them after their death. The name of <name type="person_group">Sams</name> was so<lb/>
         much cherished by all generations following <name type="person">Doctor William Sams</name><choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> that<lb/> 
         those who should have carried their father's name did not do so but<lb/>
         carried their mother's instead. (2) <del type="strikeout">As long as the mother was a <choice><sic>decendant</sic><corr>descendant</corr></choice><lb/> 
            of <name type="person">Doctor Sams</name> the children carried her name. Of course the Sams boys<lb/>
         who married and had children naturally gave their surname to their<lb/>
