<p style="indent">There has always been, according to superstition, a belief that
anything out of the ordinary happening to dead bodies<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> forecast a
coming calamity.</p>
<p style="indent">Before the automobile hearse came to be used, it was thought
that horses balking during a funeral procession meant someone else
in family was sure to follow. If a horse drawing one of the carriages
in the procession balked or rared up, one of the occupants of that
particular carriage would soon follow in death.</p>
<p style="indent">A new omen<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> <add type="caret">which</add> has found it’s way into the multitudinous group of
   superstitions already known<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> was introduced in <name type="place">Jacksonville</name> in <date when="1928">1928</date> <choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
when the casket inclosed <note type="contextual">registered by OED as a valid form</note> within a <choice><sic>hemetically</sic><corr>hermetically</corr></choice> sealed vault washed
up and floated in a spring in <name type="place">Memorial <choice><orig></orig><reg>Cemetery</reg></choice></name>.</p>
<p style="indent">It happened that a heavy continuous rainfall of several days
duration<choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> caused an old spring to rise on the cemetery lot owned by
a family named <name type="person_group">Muse</name>. The bodies of the father and mother of the
family, <name type="person">Merritt</name> and <name type="person">Sarah Muse</name><choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> had previously been buried on the lot
and two graves had been <choice><sic>cemeted</sic><corr>cemented</corr></choice> within a voult <note type="transcription">registered by the OED as a valid form</note> beneath the ground<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> with
only the top of the vault visible above. <choice><sic>Whem</sic><corr>When </corr></choice><name type="person">Mayme Delyons White</name>,

closed <note type="contextual">registered by the OED as a valid form</note>within a <choice><sic>hemetically</sic><corr>hermetically</corr></choice> sealed vault.</p>
<p style="indent">It had never been noticed before that any upheaval or sinking
of earth around about the vault had occured<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> although the parents <supplied reason="missing text" cert="high">have</supplied>
been buried there a long time; to be exact, it had been thirteen years</p>

<p>since the father <name type="person">Meritt Muse</name> had died and the same number of years that the
two graves had been cemented within the vault. Heavy steady rains
had fallen before the occasion mentioned, yet the spring had not
shown any evidence of <choice><sic>haven</sic><corr>having</corr></choice> risen<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> as the lot never had a sunken
place on it , such as was left at this particular time.</p>
<p style="indent">Now<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> the occasion which caused superstition to creep into
the story<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> and for some to think a supernatural thing had happened<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
was the fact that following the day that the casket washed up and
floated on the water, a son, <name type="person">Levi W. Muse</name><!--original looks like the middle initial is J., as just a few lines below-->, died <choice><sic>agter</sic><corr>after</corr></choice> an illness
of five days.</p>
<p style="indent">A neighbor in the vicinity of <name type="place">Memorial <choice><orig></orig><reg>Cemetery</reg></choice></name> who con-
stantly visited there<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> saw the vault floating about in the water
and became very much perturbed and at once notified a local un-
dertaker, who by incident happened at that very time <choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> to be handl-
ing the body of Levi J. Muse, son of Meritt and Sarah. The under-
taker in turn notified the members of the family and another grave
was quickly dug on a <choice><sic>friends</sic><corr>friend's</corr></choice> lot and the casket interred tempora-
rily.</p>
<p style="indent">Friends and hearers of the happening began talking of signs
they had heard of and also introducing new theories concerning the
incident in question. Some of them were sure that the <choice><sic>washing up</sic><corr>washing-up</corr></choice>
of the casket containing the body of the daughter <name type="person">Mayme Delyons White</name> was a true sign <choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
which foretold the death of the son <name type="person">Levi J. Muse</name>.</p>
<p style="indent">Although many heavy lengthy rains have fallen since that
time, the <choice><sic>care taker</sic><corr>caretaker</corr></choice> of the cemetery recently said, when a member
of the <name type="person_group">Muse family</name> inquired as to whether he had noticed the <supplied reason="missing text" cert="high">spring</supplied></p>

<p>rising after other heavy continued rains, that he had not seen it
happen during the few years he has been <choice><sic>care taker</sic><corr>caretaker</corr></choice> of the cemetery.
He further added that it was only recently that he filled in the
large hole <choice><orig>,</orig><reg/></choice> which was left after the casket washed up and the spring
receded. The Muse family had not attended to the filling of the hole<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice>
it seems<choice><orig/><reg>,</reg></choice> because of the many theories advanced concerning what would
happen should anyone of the family attend to it.</p>
