Documenting observations and doubts

To indicate uncertaintly about any feature of the transcription, we employ <unclear>, using the cert attribute to indicate a relative level of certainty ( low, medium, or high), and the reason attribute to explain the circumstances, as in the following example: <unclear cert="low" reason="Handwritten signature is difficult to read.">J. Henderson</unclear>. We consider such use of <unclear> to represent permanent documentation that should remain as part of the transcription.

To document obervations or concerns of a more temporary nature, we use XML comments in the format <!-- text here -->, inserted in the corresponding place in the file.

Added material

At times when faced with a gap or a passage that is difficult to read, we may believe we can deduce with reasonable certainty the missing content. In such cases, we mark our solution with <supplied>, using the cert attribute to indicate a relative level of certainty ( low, medium, or high), and the reason attribute to explain our explanation of the circumstances.
